Norton Antivirus 2010 Released

Sunday, 01 August 2010

Norton Antivirus have just released the 2010 edition of their software, which rolls years of virus protection expertise with anti-spyware protection.

Early reports are that that this release addresses some of the system hog complaints often leveled at antivirus and internet security packages. Antivirus programs do have the issue of needing to continuously run in the background without being noticed, and on a huge range of machines with different processors and RAM configurations. Some older PCs will always struggle with antivirus - get over it and buy a better machine.

Norton Antivirus 2009 had a significantly smaller footprint than it's predecessors which was broadly welcomed by users. The 2010 release shores up these gains with significantly increase scan speeds. The product is on the right track.

As far as virus detection goes, the new Quorum engine adds behavioral and reputational analysis making the protection as good as your going to get through a consumer product.

We'd love to hear experiences. Reviews as usual please.

Other names: Norton AntiVirus, Norten Antivirus, Noten Antivirus
Requirements: Windows XP | Windows Vista | Windows 7

Norton AntiVirus 2009

Tuesday, 06 March 2007

Norton is one of the big boys in online security, alongside McAfee. This hugely popular antivirus software from includes powerful Virus, Internet Worm and Rootkit Detection software.

Millions of PC's are protected with Norton AntiVirus and the wider Symantec family of products. According to the the vendor, the key benefits of the product are:

  • Detects and removes spyware and viruses.
  • Blocks spyware and worms automatically.
  • Prevents virus-infected emails from spreading.
  • Rootkit detection finds and removes hidden threats.
  • NEW! Improved performance delivers faster scans.
  • NEW! One click access to expert support.
  • NEW! Enhanced protection elements improve your PC security.
  • NEW! Works quietly in the background.
  • NEW! Network mapping provides a view of your home network.
  • Includes one year of automatic definition updates, new product features, and access to updated versions of Norton AntiVirus
  • On-going Protection keeps your computer protected from the latest Internet risks by automatically renewing your subscription at the regular subscription price (plus applicable tax), so you don't have to.

One of the main critisims of past versions has been the large amounts of sratup and system resources taken by the program. Any system with less that 1GB RAM and a fast processor could be crippled by NortonAntivirus 2005 and 2006. Apparently these issues have been addressed in the 2008 product, however I would be interested to hear about your experiences on the ground.

Other than the resource issue, Norton AntiVirus 2008 is a rock solid product that enjoys the immense backup of the Norton machine. The software keeps itself up-to-date (subject to a subscription fee) and has high virus detection rates.

System running slowly? Symantec have recently launched a PC Tune-up Service to help you optimize your machine. Read more about it here.

I have used Norton for about 10 years now, never had a virus. It is expensive, and the renewal warnings are annoying. Still, so far it has been worth it.

I have had Norton Anti Virus on my computer for many years. This week I had to take my computer in for virus removal. It had shut down. On my computer they removed 48 malware, 7 hijacks, cookies, and misc. things. Now tell me how good your product works. I had Norton removed and have another product installed. I will not be renewing Norton.

Sat 22nd May, 2010

about every 2 weeks or so my norton icon on the tool bar disappears and an error message one of many 8504 pops up. I have an ongoing account and repair # which means they need to escalate me to the next group up....after waiting for hours sometimes they end up uninstalling and reinstalling adding days for my inconvienence (sp) and even giving me the next norton 2010 just last week they un and reinstalled again and they installed 2009 so they are taking back what they had given in the past so now we are going backwards ...... CRAZY ....... Ive asked them what do they suggest i do to no response maybe consumer affair good luck to all that have no extra time for repairs because believe me you need plenty of time for them to fix something that shouldnt be

I still have almost 6 months to go on my yearly subscription to Norton Antivirus and I am being 'bugged' everytime my computer goes on about renewing NOW before my computer is unprotected. No where can I seem to get through to a human to rectify this situation and I sure do not want to renew 6 months in advance? Any suggestions???

Why doesn't Norton Internet Security 2009 restart when the power goes out or there is an abrupt shutdown of the computer? I've had many Norton products installed on this and prior computers and I've never that this problem before. There is no reason why I should have to un-install and then re-install Norton, just because the power goes out during a storm. Norton should start back up....regardless if the computer is shutdown due to a power failure. There is obviously something wrong with this product!
