McAfee is a trusted name in the Antivirus market that has long played second position to the popular Norton range. Those in the industry have for some time regarded McAfee as a better product, primarily due to the fact that it is less of a resource hog.
The program provides good protection against the usual suspects - viruses, Trojans, worms, malicious ActiveX controls and Java applets to name but some. Like counterpart programs it falls down a little on newer threats coming from Instant Messaging and Peer-to-Peer downloads which it doesn't scan by default.
The virus database is updated frequently and the detection rate is one of the best in the industry, having recently been awarded a VB100% award and the ICSA award.
I personally used McAfee protection for years, only decamping to Kaspersky after recommendation from a trusted security website. However the product is excellent and highly recommended.

WHAT A MISTAKE I made buying a product online from McAfee. The Virus Scan Plus would not load but did remove all existing protection from my PC.
I spent hours over several days contacting McAfee support and even they failed several times to get it to download.
It got to a point where all I wanted was my money back. I had to take a day off work to ring their 'customer service' number & was told that to get a refund I would have to take my complaint to another, sister company.
When I asked to speak to a senior representative in 'customer service' I was told I couldn't.
There is NO telephone number to register complaints with.
There is NO email address to register complaints with.
ALL I was provided with was a postal address in Holland.
I have written to this address seeking redress and an apology but have had no reply.
MCAFEE HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT I HAVE EVER HAD TO USE. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TREAT CUSTOMERS IN THIS WAY. WE ARE PEOPLE - NOT COMPUTERS!
